There are four steps to maintaining healthy and happy feet which we will address in four biweekly posts. The first and most important step is ensuring you keep your feet well moisturized.
Whether you live in a cold climate, with dry winter air or in a warmer area with higher heat during the winter months, proper moisturizing of your feet is essential. I never recommend water-based lubricants of any kind for use on your feet. In my experience, they tend not to last very long and can also contribute to the growth of bacteria and fungus in your shoes.
My three favorite moisturizers are Vaseline, Baby Oil, and Olive Oil. You can choose the one that works best for you. Apply liberally to your feet and allow it to soak into your skin for about 30 seconds. At this point, you can take some paper towels and wipe off any oily excess. There is no need to walk around all greased up. It does not add to the effectiveness of the moisturizing process.
It is also best to avoid foot soaks, although they feel good, they do nothing for the feet except to dry out the skin.
Stay tuned for more tips on keeping your feet in the best shape this holiday season.
