October is the perfect time to don your pink polish and show support for National Breast Cancer Awareness month. Each year many organizations join the fight to increase awareness of the disease and raise vital funds to find a cure, support families struggling to pay for treatment and in some cases preventative screenings. In the United States alone 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and there is still no known cure.

Founded by the inspiring Evelyn Lauder in 1993, the Breast Cancer Research Foundation established the pink ribbon to raise awareness, but she knew awareness alone was not going to cure cancer. That is why her organization has invested more than half a billion dollars in lifesaving research. They seek out the brightest minds in science and medicine and give them the resources needed to pursue their best ideas to find a cure. In 2014-2015, they will award more than $47 million in annual grants to over 220 scientists around the globe. Their philosophy, “no institution can conquer this disease alone. Together, we can”.

The National Breast Cancer Foundation Inc. (NBCF) is another organization raising awareness and funds, however their approach is a little different. They have seen how increasing healthcare costs has left many women uninsured and unable to afford the costs associated with early detection screenings, that is why NBCF provides free mammograms to women in all 50 states through their network of hospitals. They also provide valuable education, support and resources for women facing this disease.

Probably one of the most well-known nonprofits fighting breast cancer is Susan G. Komen. Established in 1982, by Nancy G. Brinker who made a promise to her dying sister, Susan, that she would do everything in her power to find a cure for breast cancer. Today Susan G. Komen is the world’s largest nonprofit sources of funding with more than $2.5 billion invested in research, community health outreach, advocacy and programs in more than 30 countries. They are the only organization that addresses breast cancer on multiple fronts such as research, community health, global outreach and public policy initiatives. They also work hand in hand with local organizations and affiliates and have over 75,000 volunteers and staff working across 18,000 U.S communities to “save lives and end breast cancer forever”.

According to cancer.gov, federal funding of breast cancer research has seen a steady decline each year. In 2010, funding was $631.2 million and in 2012 it was down to $602.7 million. Now more than ever private and corporate funding is vital to support breast cancer research and programs.
